prettier than a box o' crayons

i'm so intrigued by these crayon pieces by artist christian faur...

"My earliest memories of making art involve the use of wax crayons. I can still remember the pleasure of opening a new box of crayons: the distinct smell of the wax, the beautifully colored tips, everything still perfect and unused. Using the first crayon from a new box always gave me a slight pain. Through a novel technique that I have developed, I again find myself working with the familiar form of the crayon.

Because of the three-dimensional nature of the crayons, the individual surface images appear to change form as one moves about the gallery space. The images completely disappear when viewed from close up, allowing one to read the horizontally sequenced crayon text and to take in the beautifully colored crayon tips -- all the while being reminded of that first box of crayons."

Shift is coming! Shift is coming!

It's been a whopping three years since Shift has been to New York City. (No, the one night she was here for work in Jersey does not count.) She's coming tomorrow and leaves on Sunday. That leaves us with three days for lots of fun sisterly bonding and outings all over the city! Here are a few things on our list of things to do and places to go.The Museum of Modern Art (or MoMA), which has a new Miro exhibit that's supposed to be great.Bloomingdales! Partially because I need to make an appointment to register, and partially because it's just fun to wander around.
Dinner at L'Artusi, an awesome new Italian restaurant in the West Village.

Otherwise, we'll just make it up as we go along! Posting will be back to normal once Shift is back in Chicago next week and we're done gallivanting around New York. :)

at work

last night i went to hear annie leibovitz talk about her new book at work.

i had flipped through her previous book life work so i was pleasantly surprised to find that her newest book was less a story through pictures and more about her life as a photographer, her creative process and the technique around some of her most famous pieces.

whether or not you like leibovitz's work, it's impossible to deny her impeccable style or the way she captures people. hearing her speak about being a professional and yet being personal enough to gain people's trust was really inspiring. although the book isn't stocked with eye candy, it's an interesting read for anyone looking for photographic inspiration (or inspiration at all) should definitely pick up a copy.
